Hill Street

Arial view of Hock Lam Street and Chin Nam Street. The popular eating stalls and shops in Hock Lam and Nearby Chin Nam Streets, just off North Bridge Road, will soon have to move out to make way for urban redevelopment. The two streets have been favorite eating spots for people living and working in the area teeming with commercial houses. The shops, many of them about 100 years old and standing no more than two storeys high, are in rows in a rectangle bounded by Hill Street, Coleman Street, North Bridge Road and High Street. Today this area has made way to Funan Shopping Mall.

After Stamford Raffles founded Singapore as a trading port in 1819, there was a wave of Armenians moving to Singapore from Malacca, Penang, Java, Madras and Calcutta in the 1820s and 1830s. There were Armenians in Singapore by 1824, and the population had grown to 35 by 1833. Most of the Armenians who settled in Singapore during this time were traders.

The first Armenian to trade in Singapore was Aristarkies Sarkies, who started his business in 1820 and traded as Sarkies & Company.

Completed by March 1836, the Armenian Apostolic Church of St Gregory is the oldest surviving church building in Singapore. It was designed and built by colonial architect G. D. Coleman in 1835, with funding from the small but wealthy Armenian community. The Armenian Church has been described as “one of the most ornate and best finished pieces of architecture” in early Singapore.

Old Hill Street Police Station

From 1915 to 1935, the Singapore Police Force went through a reorganisation and several police stations were built to deal with increasing Chinese secret society activities. This led to the construction of the Hill Street Police Station building, which was completed in 1934. Now home to the Ministry of Communications and Information and the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth.
